Your choice of topic decides almost everything: the time you will spend in the library, how easy it is to find data, and even how the jury receives you on defense day. Yet many students choose it in one evening, often because a classmate picked the same one. Here is a simple 6-step method to find a thesis or final-year project topic that holds up until the end.
In short: a good thesis or final-year project topic interests you, fits your program, is feasible with your resources and deadline (access to the field and to data) and is precise enough to lead to a research question. Test its feasibility and do a mini literature review before committing.
1. Start from what really interests you
You will live with this topic for 3 to 9 months. If it bores you in the first week, motivation will collapse at the first obstacle. Quickly list 5 themes that struck you during your studies: a course, an internship, a problem observed in your city, your host company or at the hospital.
For each theme, ask yourself: "What do I still not understand about this?" That is often where a good topic hides.
2. Check that the topic fits your program
An exciting topic outside your specialty will be hard to defend. Reread your institution's rules or writing guide (business school, law and economics faculty, nursing institute, science faculty…): some impose a field, a type of study or a link with the internship. If in doubt, show your list to your supervisor before going further.
3. Test feasibility before committing
A good topic is feasible within the time and resources you have. Ask yourself four questions:
Does the data exist? Will you be able to interview people, access documents, company figures or patient records (with permission)?
Is the field accessible? A survey in three different cities costs a lot of time and travel.
Do you have the tools? A quantitative study requires knowing SPSS, Excel or equivalent software.
Is the deadline realistic? Count the time for data collection, analysis and writing, then add a 20% margin.
4. Do a mini literature review
Spend 2 to 3 hours on Google Scholar, Cairn, ScienceDirect or your university's thesis repository. Type your keywords and check:
whether there are enough articles to build your theoretical framework (at least ten solid references);
whether the topic has not already been covered in exactly the same way, in the same place, recently.
An already-studied topic is not necessarily to be rejected. It is often enough to change the setting (another region of Morocco), the population (students, SMEs, nurses…) or the period to bring something new.
5. Narrow the topic down
The most frequent mistake is a topic that is too broad. "Digital marketing in Morocco" cannot be covered in a thesis. Narrow it with three filters: who, where, what exactly.
Topic too broad → narrowed topic
Digital marketing in Morocco: the effect of Instagram ads on the purchase intention of students in Kenitra
Patient satisfaction: the satisfaction of surgical inpatients in a regional hospital with nursing care
Remote work: remote work and employee engagement in call centers in Rabat
6. Turn the topic into a research question
A topic becomes a real thesis when it asks a clear question. For example: "To what extent do Instagram ads influence the purchase intention of students in Kenitra?" This question will then guide your research problem, hypotheses and questionnaire. If you are stuck at this step, read our article on how to write a research problem statement.
Checklist: is your topic ready?
It interests you and fits your program.
It is precise: one population, one place, one period.
You know where and how to collect data.
There are enough references for the theoretical framework.
It fits into one clear research question.
Your supervisor has approved it.
Example topics by field
These examples show the expected level of precision. Adapt them to your setting:
Marketing: the effect of online reviews on the purchase intention of customers of a clothing chain in Casablanca.
Human resources: motivation factors of employees in a call center in Rabat.
Finance and management control: setting up a budget monitoring dashboard in an industrial SME.
Logistics: optimizing inventory management in a distribution warehouse.
Nursing (ISPITS): nurses' knowledge of healthcare-associated infection prevention in a regional hospital.
Economics: the determinants of household savings in a given region, based on a survey.
After choosing the topic: the next steps
Once the topic is approved, move on to the research problem, then the literature review. For a company final-year project, the topic is often negotiated while looking for an internship: see finding a final-year internship in Morocco. All the steps are summarized in our dissertation guide.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to choose a thesis topic?
One to two weeks: a few days to list ideas, a few hours of literature search, then a discussion with your supervisor. Better to lose a week at the start than three months along the way.
Can I change my topic along the way?
Yes, especially at the beginning, but the later you change, the more work you lose. If you feel the topic is not working (no data, no references), talk to your supervisor straight away. The topic can often be adjusted instead of starting over.
Does the topic have to be original?
It must contribute something, but it does not have to be completely new. Applying a known model to a new Moroccan setting is a perfectly accepted contribution at bachelor's and master's level.
Is an already-studied topic forbidden?
No. Revisiting an existing topic in another context (another city, population or sector) is common and legitimate, as long as you justify it in the research problem.
